Aren't a lot of Zeppelin songs just 'mediocre' blues songs though? Well, they would be if anyone else played them of course.
Yeh, Bonham's drums were just a simple 4/4 beat a lot of the time, and his drumming wasn't constantly energetic like Moon's, but that was just his style. It seems like Bonham was more interested in the sound of his drums and what they added to the song, rather than always showing off and showing us exactly what he could do. It was only at times like this that we saw it.

most zeppelin songs have mediocre drums. it the truth. i honestly could say that keith moon is a better overall drummer then if drumming isn't based on difficulty.

i am tired of difficulty being the sole thing people base how good solos are on. The hardest guitar solos are always ranked the best and same here! Has it occured to anyone that solos should be ranked on how good they sound, how much they appeal to the audience, and how well they go with the song?

Its highly likely that Bonso couldnt give a fuck about the comments saying Peart or whoever were better drummers than him. As long as he could get a pint at his local and dedicate himself to his family and bandmates. Thats probably what mattered to him.

Excellent comment. Zep and Purple forever. (and Jimi)

don't get me wrong-this song and solo is amazing! i think that bonham is a little overrated though. most songs are just basic drums.

If you're all about influential and original why are you even worrying about pulling off Bonham's riffs? Go make up some of your own shit, and if your band makes it anywhere near the level Zeppelin did I might pay you the least bit of attention. Maybe he does get an undeserving status as a drummer, but I wouldn't go near saying he's a "very mediocre drummer". The fact is it's the band that matters, and Led Zeppelin as a whole flowed perfectly. No other drummer could have taken his place.

It's just pure ignorance to say 'oh,someone was original and influential, but, you know, it's pretty easy to play their stuff, so they're not that good'.
Is, any of the Beatles particularly hard to play, for example? No. It's one thing playing great music, it's quite another coming up with it yourself, or improvising it like the man here.
Anyone who says music has to be technically daunting to have any merit can't know much about music.

if it's not that hard to pull off why aren't you and your band "influential and original"?
don't bag on people that are way better than you at doing what they do. |
